Welcome to Appalachia Service Project, Inc.
ASP summer staff: the hardest summer job you'll ever love! Thanks for your interest in working with ASP this summer. The application process has three steps. Step 1: General information, résumé, 3 references (for First Year, Chaplain, and *Dump Truck Driver applicants) and cover letter (for all Returning and Support Staff applicants) submitted online. Before you begin you will need your driver's license and your 2011 calendar. For ALL applicants (both First Year and Returning applicants) ASP requests a professional résumé. Your résumé needs to be typed and no more than 2 pages and should include more than just ASP-related experiences. For First Year applicants only: you will need to provide the names and contact information for 3 references. For Returners, Center Directors and Returning Center Directors: you must submit a cover letter. Please address the following in your letter: Why are you reapplying? What do you want to get out of this experience? What experiences have you had since last summer that qualify you for this position? For Center Director applicants, why are you applying as a Center Director instead of as a Returner? Please keep your letter to one page and address it to the Home Repair Ministries Department.
Select "Search Jobs." Choose the position for which you are applying. Read the important information and then click "Apply Now." Complete the fields requested. Read the EEOC Compliance and Employment Disclosure and click "Submit Application." Answer "Additional Questions" and click "Submit Application." Send a $10.00 check or money order to ASP so we can access your driving record. Mail to ASP, 4523 Bristol Hwy., Johnson City, TN 37601, Attn: Flossie McCaffrey. *Applicants for Staff Chaplain or Dump Truck Driver positions are not required to have previously served on ASP staff. All Staff Chaplain applicants are required to submit a cover letter, resume and 3 references (regardless of whether or not they have previously served on ASP staff). References are only required for Dump Truck Driver applicants who have not previously served on ASP staff.
If you need to update your information after submitting an application, click "Submit an Application" and follow the steps to request a password. Save this password, you will need it to log in and register for a SAW. Step 2: Online Assessment (all applicants). - ASP uses a profile assessment to measure Summer Staff applicant skills and behavior traits.
- You'll need about an hour to complete the assessment and a calculator.
Please answer questions honestly and don't worry about having the "correct" answer. It's not intended to be like an exam at school! Remember, we are looking for many different qualities in Summer Staff, so, while we encourage you to do your best, please do not worry about getting questions wrong. You'll receive a link to the assessment when you complete Step 1. Steps 1 and 2 need to be completed on or by January 1 for all First Year and Returning applicants. - Chaplain and Dump Truck Drivers must complete Steps 1 and 2 by March 1, 2011.
- The Staff Liaison application deadline is rolling and will close once all positions have been filled.
- Attention Returning Staff Applicants: If you took the Profiles Assessment as part of ASP's trial series this past summer, you must take the assessment again if applying to be on staff in summer of 2011.
Step 3: Attend Staff Applicant Weekend (SAW). Registration for SAWs begins November 1. Sign up is first come, first serve until we reach capacity at each site - so sign up early! Watch for reminder emails or posts on Facebook! The weekend will include an interview and lots of group activities to help you learn about the job. You will receive more information about the weekend and ride sharing in the fall. Here are the dates and locations for our 2011 SAWs: January 14-16: St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, Bowie, MD January 21-23: Christ United Methodist Church, High Point, NC
January 28-30: St. Stephen United Methodist Church, Charlotte, NC February 11-13: North United Methodist Church, Indianapolis, IN February 18-20: First United Methodist Church, Evanston, IL
Attention all returning and support staff applicants: ASP offers an early-hire program to all returning applicants and support staff applicants. Those who would like to participate must have their completed applications (including assessment) submitted by MIDNIGHT December 1, 2010. The HRMD will review those applications, conduct phone interviews, and offer positions between then and December 15, 2010. Anyone offered a position who wishes to accept it will be asked to give a firm commitment to the summer (meaning they fully intend to be on staff unless a life emergency comes up) by December 17, 2010. All early hire applicants who accept a position are still required to attend a SAW unless they are out of the country. Early Hire staff who attend a SAW will be asked to assist the HRMD with helping the weekend run smoothly. At this time we are not setting a limit as to how many will be hired early; however, the HRMD reserves the right to defer any early hire applicant until the SAW season, at which point they will receive full consideration for staff. If you have any questions about summer staff or SAWs, contact Steve Tomick at (423) 854-4419 or Steve.Tomick@ASPhome.org. If you experience technical problems with the application, contact Flossie McCaffrey at (423) 854-4411 or Flossie.McCaffrey@ASPhome.org.
